After launching race
silencers for the 2004 Yamaha R1 in double quick time Micron have now
developed the Hydratech Serpent race pipework for the bike – ahead of the
competition.
The pipework has been fully
formed with “D” shaped down pipes which optimize the space available under
the bike. This allows a larger cross section of pipework to be used in the
limited space – if the pipework was round with the same cross sectional
area it would be impossible to fit within the fairing.
The “D” shaped pipework
actually follows the lines of the fairing, with only very small gaps
between the down pipes, giving it a smooth, sculptured look. The ability
of the hydro forming process has allowed Micron to further capitalize on
the smooth lines and ensure the gaps between the pipes are parallel, even
on the double tapered down pipes.
The whole system is hydro
formed from the down pipes right the way through to the can inlet.
The
walls of the pipework are formed by high pressure water and force the
walls of the pipework out making the wall extremely thin – and incredibly
light.
Not only does Micron's
Serpent race pipework fit perfectly and look silky smooth, but you also
end up with a healthy power increase of up to 7 bhp over standard. All in
all a great package for the ultimate in power style and fit.
Micron was the first
manufacturer in the world to produce hydro formed race pipework for the
motorcycle aftermarket back in 2000. Since then they have been releasing
more and more new models and refining development and production
techniques.
“It has taken a while for
customers to understand why the hydro formed pipework works so well,
compared to pipework using standard pipe diameters available. Since the
success of Micron's pipework on the race track – in British Superbikes and
World Superbikes customers now understand the technology” says Dave Hunter
, Research and Development Manager for Micron.
“Interestingly it seems our
competitors are also realizing the benefits to power gains and precise fit
that hydro forming pipework can bring, as they have also begun to hydro
form small elements of some pipework” he continues.
Micron remains leader of the
pack in hydro forming technology for motorcycles, and is pleased to see
other serious players in the exhaust market endorsing the benefits.
